The Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT) is a crucial program for ensuring that the supply chain is secure, however, it is often misunderstood.  Many businesses are reluctant to join the CTPAT program because of various misconceptions and myths about its benefits.   • Myth #1 – It is Mandatory to be CTPAT Certified
    • Debunked – CTPAT is very beneficial, but Customs and Border Protection (CBP) does not require companies to join. It is 100% a voluntary program. However, participating in the program does provide significant benefits to your business.

 

  • Myth #2 – Only Large Corporations can be CTPAT Certified
    • Debunked – As long as a business meets eligibility requirements, you can apply to the CTPAT program. Business of all sizes can join, and there are a good amount of small businesses already involved in the program.

    • Debunked – Businesses must maintain CTPAT compliance at their facilities. This is monitored through Annual Reviews, Security Updates, & Periodic Revalidations (every 4 years). Failure to maintain compliance could lead to suspension or removal from the CTPAT program.

 

  • Myth #4 – CTPAT Guarantees No Inspections from CBP
    • Debunked – Being in the CTPAT program reduces the chances of cargo inspections at the border, however, it does not eliminate them. CBP still has a right to conduct random and at-risk inspections of your cargo.

 

  • Myth #5 – Only Companies in the U.S can be apart of the CTPAT Program
    • Debunked – Manufacturers, Highway Carriers, & 3PLs in Mexico and Canada can also apply to the CTPAT Program.
